Horizontal Traffic Signs

The thesis of a professor from South Dacota University in 1883 was reading that the road should be divided into two with white lines in two different directions if the speed of vehicles exceeds 25 miles one day (when there wasn’t the technology of internal combustion engine technology) and this thesis started to be used in 1911 as the number of traffic accidents increased and laid the foundations of horizontal signing today.

Since then, different grounds, climates and traffic conditions also brought the necessity of changing the implementation materials and methods. Horizontal signing first started with liquid paints but then transformed into thermoplastic and cold plastic products due to increased traffic, physical conditions, durability, climatic changes and ease of implementation.

Consequently, the thermoplastic materials have become prominent thanks to ease of application, cost-saving nature, environmental effects and ease of renewal. The horizontal signing work with thermoplastic materials can be performed in different methods due to reasons such as vehicle intensity, covering type and climatic conditions. Such methods are gathered under two main headings like Spraying and Laying. Both methods have pros and coins. Such applications vary according to the technical specifications of application tools.

Thermoplastic road line applications are made with 1-2 mm thickness spraying, 2-6 mm thickness laying or 2 mm thickness ready thermoplastic tape application.

It is possible to apply cold road lines with chlorine rubber based paint or acrylic based paint or water based paint.

Double component road line applications are performed using spraying method by means of machinery or laying method in machinery or manually.

In cases that road lines have to be erased, then such lines can be erased by pressurized water spraying method without damaging the asphalt. Any kind of Thermoplastic Paint, Cold Paint, Double Component Paint and also the Tyre Traces on runways can be erased with High Pressurized Water (2750 bars) without damaging the surface at 2~40 m/min. speed and 0~45 cm width on any kind of asphalt or concrete surface.
